UNESCO designated the Niagara Escarpment, part of the Greenbelt, a World Biosphere Reserve in 1990 to recognize its unique biological features; including 500 bird species, 55 animal species, and 37 varieties of orchid. In addition to natural areas, over 50% of the Greenbelt is agricultural land and heritage protected from urban sprawl. Farmers produce a diversity of food and help protect the environment.
